Refreshing and Delicious Tomato & Fresh Basil Salad Recipe

This Tomato Basil Salad is fresh, easy to make, and really delicious. The Tomato Basil Salad is similar to a Caprese salad, except it has feta cheese instead of fresh mozzarella. It’s easy to make and keeps in the fridge for several days. Summertime is the best time to make it as the fresh tomatoes and fresh basil are at their peak and in full harvest.

 I have the fondest memories of my grandmother and I eating tomatoes fresh from her garden, just like you would an apple. She put a little salt on the tomato before she took a bite. We would sit by the window airconditioning unit and try to stay cool during the hot summer Louisiana afternoons. AWE!!! I miss her and those sweet days- nothing like a sweet grandmother. If she were still alive, I know she would love this fresh Basil Tomato Salad recipe. 


First things first- to ALL my non-gardening friends out there- I am with you. As much as I love the idea of a beautiful garden, producing a bounty of fresh, organic, seasonal vegetables to feed and nourish my family- it’s just not going to happen right now.

1. I think I might become prideful and too big for my britches- I know I would be boastful at my gardening awesomeness.

2. I don’t have the time in this current season of life.

Therefore, I will continue to gladly support my local farmers and CSAs and purchase my beautiful bounty =).

Even though a gorgeous, amazing garden is not my thing right now, a simple herb garden is. I want to encourage all the “black thumbs” out there- herb gardens are SO SIMPLE and wonderful to have!! Fresh basil and mint are some of the easiest for me to grow. You can find a little spot in a flower bed or just in a pot, plant your herbs, water occasionally and enjoy all season long.

Fresh Basil

Homegrown tomatoes are best to use for this recipe, but store-bought will certainly work if homegrown isn’t an option. If you’re lucky enough to have a neighbor or friend that blesses you with fresh produce from their garden- be so thankful!!!

The tomatoes, fresh basil and olive oil, along with the zing of the vinegar and saltiness of the feta cheese deliver the perfect combination.

You can serve this Tomato Basil Salad as a salad, or appetizer with crackers or bread. I really like Flackers, which are a gluten-free cracker option.

  • 5 medium tomatos chopped
  • 1/3 cup ripe olives optional
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/3 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • dash mineral salt
  1. Add all ingredients in a bowl and mix. Chill for 4 hours. Serve as a salad or appetizer with bread or crackers.
